Preserving a Champion’s Legacy in Bronze

Some horses leave a lasting impression on the track. Others leave a legacy that extends far beyond racing itself. For Cambridge Stud owners Sir Brendan and Lady Jo Lindsay, Probabeel is one of those rare horses.

Bred by Waikato Stud and purchased by Sir Brendan and Lady Jo Lindsay in 2018, Probabeel went on to become one of New Zealand’s most celebrated thoroughbreds. With 13 wins from 29 starts, four Australian Group 1 victories and New Zealand Horse of the Year honours, her racing career captured attention on both sides of the Tasman.

When the time came to create a permanent tribute to her extraordinary career, Cambridge Stud approached us here at Bespoke Sculpture to bring that vision to life through a life-size bronze sculpture.

The commission was not simply about recreating the physical form of a champion racehorse. It was about capturing presence, personality and legacy in a way that would feel timeless within the environment of Cambridge Stud itself.

Working with the whole team at Cambridge Stud throughout the process, the sculpture was developed from a series of photographs and detailed measurements. Every stage required careful consideration, from the stance and proportions through to the finer details that contribute to a horse’s character and movement.

For meaningful commissions such as this, collaboration is an important part of the process. The goal is not only to create an accurate sculpture, but to ensure the finished piece reflects the emotional significance behind the project itself.

Bronze was chosen for its permanence, durability and timeless quality. Finished in a dual dark bronze patina, the sculpture was designed to sit naturally within the surrounding landscape while carrying the visual weight and presence appropriate for a horse of Probabeel’s stature.

Once fabrication was complete, the sculpture was personally delivered by the Bespoke Sculpture team and carefully moved into its final position on site. Installation is a significant part of large-scale sculptural work and one that requires both planning and experience to ensure the finished result feels effortless within its setting.

Projects such as Probabeel, highlight what bespoke sculpture can offer beyond aesthetics alone. Sculpture has the ability to preserve stories, celebrate achievement and create lasting points of connection within meaningful spaces. Whether for private properties, commercial environments, public landscapes or legacy projects, custom sculpture allows people to create something deeply personal and enduring.

At Bespoke Sculpture, we believe the process should feel collaborative, approachable and professionally guided from concept through to installation. Every project is different, but the goal remains the same: to create sculpture that belongs within its environment and carries meaning long into the future.

The Probabeel commission stands as a celebration of an exceptional racing career, but also as a reminder of the role sculpture can play in preserving moments, achievements and legacies that deserve to endure.
